Carol Honigberg began her music career as a child, and studied at the Eastman School of Music, Roosevelt University and Northwestern University. She concertized widely throughout Europe and the US, and recorded on the Musical Heritage Society label.
Carol’s son, Steven Honigberg, followed in her footsteps to become a world class cellist. A Juilliard graduate who studied with Leonard Rose and Channing Robbins, Steven was a member of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) through 2024, hired under Mstislav Rostropovich’s leadership. He has performed as soloist with major orchestras including the Chicago Symphony and NSO, appearing at venues such as the Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, and Ravinia Festival. Honigberg served as Director of the Chamber Music series at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum for eight years, is a member of Gerard Schwarz’s All-Star Orchestra, the Smithsonian Chamber Society and is author of “Leonard Rose: America’s Golden Age and Its First Cellist” (2010).
Steven now serves as Pilgrim Chamber Players’ Artistic Director. In this role, he ensures that the high-quality performances continue. During each concert, he provides the audience with information about the pieces and the composers. Post-concert receptions give audience members the opportunity to meet performers one-on-one. Concerts are held in a historic landmark venue with free parking and ADA accessibility. Admission includes entry in a small drawing.
Pilgrim Chamber Players is committed to cultivating the next generation of classical music lovers and performers. Every year, Pilgrim Chamber Players presents “Stars of Tomorrow”, a showcase featuring a diverse mix of young virtuoso musicians and ensembles — all under the age of 18 — hand-selected by the Artistic Director from music schools throughout the Chicagoland area. The repertoire spans classical to contemporary, making it a popular favorite with families.
Pilgrim also offers student tickets at $10, which includes both the performance and the post-concert reception. Additionally, the organization is available to present educational workshops at local schools and senior living facilities by invitation. Adult tickets are $20.

This program brings together Toby Appel, a well-known violist who is a professor at The Juilliard School, as well as pianist Marta Aznavoorian, violinists John and Karyn Macfarlane, violist Anthony Devroye, and cellists Haddon Kay and Steven Honigberg.
“These fine chamber musicians will honor a composer whose music has always been central to Pilgrim’s mission,” said Artistic Director Steven Honigberg. “Brahms wrote music of extraordinary depth and beauty. We cannot think of a more fitting way to close our 28th season.”
The program will begin with Robert Schumann’s deeply romantic Fantasiestücke Op. 73 for viola and piano, followed by Brahms’s passionate, bold Cello Sonata No. 2 in F major, Op. 99. The program concludes with Brahms’ String Sextet No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 18, famous for its warmth and ebullience.
