Lake Bluff Influencers: A Legacy of Creative Spirit

Long before hashtags and viral trends, Lake Bluff’s artists, writers, musicians and entertainers were shaping culture in ways that reached far beyond this small North Shore village.

Lake Bluff History Museum’s new exhibit, Influencers: A Legacy of Creative Spirit, opens October 19 and explores how creativity has been at the heart of the community for more than a century.

In the early 1900s, Lake Bluff was known as a conservative, Prohibition-minded town. Yet, nestled along the lakefront was a thriving enclave of free-spirited artists, musicians and writers who lived in an area known as The Artists Colony. Building on the village’s earlier Chautauqua-inspired camp meetings, these creatives helped define Lake Bluff’s cultural identity and left an influence that resonates today.

The exhibit highlights this legacy through stories, artifacts and visuals showcasing the poets, illustrators, painters, musicians, actors and others who called Lake Bluff home. Visitors will discover how a spirit of collaboration and innovation turned a small town into a hub for creativity — and how that same energy continues to inspire.
